History and Program

The foundation stone for the present Verlagsgruppe Oetinger with its various publishing companies and brands was laid by Verlag Friedrich Oetinger, in 1946. Since the publication of the German edition of Astrid Lindgren’s world-famous Pippi Longstocking in 1949, the family-run publishing company, named after its founder and now in its third generation, is one of the most successful German children’s and young adult book publishers and regularly in the forefront of the market for German-language children’s and young adult books.

In addition to the Astrid Lindgren classics, Verlagsgruppe Oetinger publishes the works of Germany’s most successful authors, Kirsten Boie, Cornelia Funke, Paul Maar and Sabine Ludwig among them. The Ogglies, the Sat and Petterson and Findus are all huge, iconic children’s favourites. Titles, such as Cornelia Funke’s Inkworld Trilogy, Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games and Marah Woolf’s Divine Spark are bestsellers for all ages. The publishing group’s authors, illustrators and translators regularly receive awards for their work.
