November (Amber) Lark is seventeen and she has just run away from the assisted living flat she shares with other young people. Shortly before her sixth birthday, her parents inexplicably disappeared – and now she thinks she has found a clue. And so she sets out for a strange city, accompanied only by her cat. On the very first night, sitting in a miserable housing block, freezing in her rain-soaked clothes, she spots a tent lit up red and yellow that holds a magical attraction for her. Inside she can see a boy reading a book – but whenever Amber approaches, he disappears along with his tent. Katya, on the other hand, the owner of the pub where Amber’s father was last seen, not only offers her a job but is always there for her, too. But can Amber be sure that the boy isn’t the person sending her the terrible threatening letters? And what about the other men, the pub guests with whom Amber seeks protection and a sense of security, but who only exploit her vulnerability – at least until the moment, when Amber realises that she must decide either to destroy herself – or to set out for a new future.
A great novel from Antonia Michaelis featuring a strong, yet vulnerable heroine amidst murderous secrets, in a shadowy world between dream and reality, and breathtakingly gripping.
