Gitte Spee was born in Surabaya, Indonesia, in 1950 and has been living in the Netherlands since she was eleven. She held a variety of jobs – working as a photo lab assistant, typist, telephonist and secretary – before attending the Gerrit Rierveld Academy in Amsterdam when she was 27.
